The Australian skipper has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.
Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming Ashes series.
Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.
Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest set to start on the 21st of November in the WACA.
He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about his chances of taking part.
"We know that time is getting short and multiple considerations involved, not just the back issue, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.
"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a significant role. With luck starting in Perth. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."
Previous Setbacks
He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand recently after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.
There is a track record of back injuries, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss three Australian summers in a short span.
The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the contest.
The selector indicated that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the opener.
Alternative Arrangements
Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.
The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against India as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.
He labeled it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."
"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the first Test as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.
"He was only going to play the starting games anyway. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we opted to take a cautious route."
