Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when numerous of them floated into the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the airport's airspace.

Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that such operations become unprofitable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
